It is so sad and frustrating but we are still glad to go home at the same time.

Today was all about shopping so today I wont be posting anything besides this!

Thanks for following my trip this time again!
I am truly humbled and grateful!

Cheers!
RobertUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5260804984285038424.post-8595758370748292782015-04-07T18:43:00.000+03:002015-04-07T18:43:04.321+03:00Takaoka and back to Tokyo! So as said I went to Takaoka which lies in Toyama prefecture near Kanazawa. I went there to meet my Japanese "mother".
We went together with my girlfriend and my mom was so happy to see us as were we to see her!
She was still the same super energetic gal she always has been and that I remembered. Unfortunately she had still a lot of work to do and we only had one night there so we stayed at the house to wait for her and in the evening we went to a great Spanish restaurant where they served some AMAZING tapas and food. We ordered and ate a lot!
Well mom had work in the morning and was coming back first at 2 p.m. so we slept until a bit before twelve.

After a quick shower I popped into the local supermarket to get some ingredients to make cinnamon rolls (Finnish style). We barely had made them ready when we already had to leave to the train station.
We said our farewells and left towards Tokyo.
There we met up with my girlfriends sister and went to Akihabara to browse the stores for anything interesting. I bought some retro games for my brother.

After a while we started to get hungry and we wanted to go eat some BBQ since it would be our last chance for it now here in Japan!
We searched and searched and when we started to be super hungry we quickly returned to our Hostel and checked the internet for answers to our troubles and found a good place just 5 min.'s away so we we dashed there!

It must not be left unsaid: I so F*cking LOVE IT ! We ordered, grilled and munched our stomach full!

Tomorrow will be our last full day here and we have to be very smart in using it to its full capacity!

Cheers! And as always, thanks for reading!
RobertUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5260804984285038424.post-32509774622248584082015-04-06T09:18:00.002+03:002015-04-06T09:18:55.753+03:00past passing days here in Japan So I have been a bit busy here in Japan during the evenings so I have not had time to write.

Well about the hanami on the 4th... We arrived around three o'clock in Toyko that day so we made our preparations as quick as we could and I was really looking forwards to it.
When we made it there it was already near 6 o'clock!!!!!!! Well we saw people leaving the park and the event had clearly ended and I got super depressed thinking I had missed my chance to meet a few youtubers I wanted to meet.

Thank God that there was a after party planned at the Hub, a british style pub chain here in Japan.
We made our way there and lo and behold there they were! The people I had been longing to see where there. I got there and said my greetings and we chatted a while and it felt very absurd yet awesome.
The evening went by nicely whilst socializing and drinking.

The next day we woke up early for no real reason. It was the day we were to meet a couple I had talked with on Couchsurfing, to go do an Izakaya tour.
We were to meet at the Kaminarimon police box at three so we had plenty of time to go and eat breakfast and to eat lunch and then we also circled around Ueno for a while to kill the time.

After that we met up with this REALLY NICE couple. They were so super friendly and fun!
They had even gone so far as to meet us at a location that was most convenient for us and even done some beforehand research of the places!
The first place we went too was a small one where we had to stand, but for us it is nothing wrong with that. We drank and had a really nice chat with our host and the patrons at the bar.

From there we went to a nice Izakaya which was owned by a husband and wife team :)
The husband was working as the chef and the wife was the server etc. They were quite old but it only gave the place a even better and homelier atmosphere!

From there we went to a standing bar where we had just a few drinks and I tried for the first time in my life something that was called a Wine highball. I have tasted a whisky highball before but this was surprisingly good. Highball is a drink where you mix the alcohol base with soda water and pour it on ice.

From there we went to our last place which was underground so you could really say it was a underground bar hahaha :) But it was fun and above all not so expensive. Actually none of the places were expensive.
We had so much fun that night and we are so grateful to our host!

Today we are going to Takaoka to meet my Japanese mother!

Cheers
Robert
I didn't know that the dome and museum was undergoing some restorations so it was a bit sad that we only got see the main exhibition at the museum. But as always it was really impressive and it always leaves you silent afterwards.

From there we walked the shopping district for quite a while and finally made our way to my favorite place: Okonomimura. There we went to eat Okonomiyaki "pancakes". The smell was mouthwatering and it was very entertaining to watch it being prepared in front of you. We struck up a conversation with some of the patrons of the shop and had a good time alongside the delicious meal.

From there we walked to the peace park to have a couple of drinks and to watch the sakuras since they were just SO beautiful!

Today we woke to a rainy weather which was a bit depressing since we only had two days in Hiroshima and today we were going to Miyajima. Well the weather may not have been the most optimal, but the scenery was just as great. The only thing that really bothered was just the wetness and the puddles on the ground. We walked to the Itsukushima shrine and patted some deer on the way.
They were totally soaked so it was a bit like patting a wet dog, not so pleasant though cute.
The mountains were clad in clouds and looked just so amazing. It is sad that we in Finland don't have so many mountains.

After we started to get wet we started to leave back to the hostel since we were not in the mood to do anything else this day anymore. Tomorrow we will go to Tokyo and to the Tokyo Youtube Hanami!
Looking forward to that!

Cheers
Robert
We used the coin operated washing machine here at our hostel. It's so nice that you can wash your clothes here so you don't have to bring a ton of clothes with you or optionally buy them here. After washing we went and ate before taking the next train towards the Saga-Arashiyama station and from there we walked to the Tenryu-ji temple to see the temple buildings and gardens.
I've always loved that place because of it garden and surrounding mountain.
The Cherry trees were amazing and I was so sad that my battery died, AGAIN, before I had time to take any good pictures. Luckily my girlfriend has her camera!
We walked around and moved next to the entrance to the Bamboo groove just near by the temple. It was a long path with tall bamboo trees on each side. It was really pleasant to walk along it even tough there were quite a lot of people there.
As we were ready with our pleasant stroll, we returned to the train station and went back to the central railway station and ate some curry udon that, unnecessary to say, was delicious.

We continued by train from there to Fushimi and from there on we walked to the Fushimi Inari Taisha. It is famous for its many Torii gates lining up to the mountain and around it.
We got to enjoy it during the evening. It was so mystical and beautiful when it was lit up!
We walked up, around and down the mountain and we were beat when we returned back to the hostel. *phew it was a fun climb but the only sad part was that my girlfriend tripped and broke a lens on her camera. But we got many good photos!
If you ever have the chance, do visit it during the dark hours as well, since it's open 24h this is possible. I highly recommend!

Cheers
Today we went Biking in Kyoto. We rented bikes from our hostel and made our way towards Nijo castle. It was really nice now during the cherry blossom season. The gardens were very nice and the girls also liked them.

We walked around the main building and then the garden. I liked that they had some stalls, selling various thing, at the temple grounds. I especially liked that I got to have some sake and plumb wine tastings at one of the stalls. It was good and I ended up buying one bottle of Umeshu or plumb wine.

From there we biked to Kinkakuji to see the famous golden pavilion. It just is always a pleasure to see. I really liked the scenery now during the sakura season. I am so glad we came during this season.
We walked around and enjoyed fully the scenery.

After that we made our way towards the Silver pavilion or Ginkakuji, The temple had already closed so we just walked down the philosophers path with our bikes, towards the Nanzen-ji temple.

At Nanzenji we just took some pictures and walked around before returning back to our hostel.
Tonight we were a bit tired so that's why my post is so short as well.,

So until next time!

Cheers.
Robert
Today after waking and making ourselves ready we went to the coffeekan near the station to have breakfast. Today we were going to sight-see with my friend whom I met when I was travelling Nagoya the last time I was in Japan. I met him trough Couch surfing. Back then he showed me around Nagoya but this time he came here, to Kyoto, with his coworker from India.
First we went to Sanjuusangendo temple to see the hall with the 1001 Buddha statues in it. The weather was a bit rainy but we didn't mind since we were in a company. If I had been alone it would have probably been a bit worse.

Toji-In

We strolled through the yard first which I must say, is much more beautiful now in spring than it was during summer. Though summertime is not so bad at all.
After seeing the breathtaking statues and awed at the disciplined detailing n the statues, we left to have lunch. We ate curry together at CoCoIchibaya before walking to the station. Everyone got so tired after eating, so after we got to the bus to go to the next location, we were all sleeping inside the buss.
Next up was the Toji-in temple where the founder of the Ashikaga bakufu, Ashikaga Takauji and the next Ashikaga shoguns after him, were buried there.
It had a really nice Japanese garden and a small rock garden. The entrance was 500 yen but well worth it thanks to the garden.
From there it was just a 8 minute walk to the more famous Ryoan-ji temple. The temple is known for its magnificent rock gardens and it had a real nice garden surrounding the main building. A lot of sakura trees and other beautiful plants. To bad that my battery died on my phone so I had nothing to take photos with. But I got to take my video footage with my GoPro at least.

Ryoan-ji

We walked and talked and had a good time and after leaving Ryoan-ji we went together to the shopping streets near kawaramachi. There we strolled around and gazed with wonder at the multitude and diversity of products that were sold there. Truly something very Japanese could be observed over there.

After that came goodbyes. We parted there with my friend and continued then with Wilhelmina and Hilda towards our hostel. We went on our way to the Kyoto Navi shopping mall to shop and from there we went to a near by Japanese restaurant to eat Shabu-Shabu. It is a food where you have a pot with boiling stock in it and you put vegetables there and you have thinly sliced cuts of meat that you quickly dip in the boiling soup with your sticks, and swirl it around until cooked. the meat is then dipped in sauce or into a raw egg and eaten with rice. It was sooooooooooooooooooooo good!!
Last up was a quick food shopping at the super and then back to our hostel.
Tomorrow well rent bikes and go to new places in Kyoto.

Cheers
We went to the Delifrance bakery near the Kyoto station to eat their breakfast set, which included Coffee ,a croissant, bacon, salad and a yogurt. I still remember my first time in Kyoto and this was the place where I ate back then every morning the same thing. I really liked it back then and have fond memories of the service so it has been a morning ritual here in Kyoto for me to go there and eat the breakfast. It's pretty cheap even, considering what is included.
From there we walked to the Gion area to see the older part of town and some temples and or shrines. We walked all the way from the station so it took us a while to get there but the scenery was super nice.
In Gion we looked around some shops and ate some ramen and then we walked to Kyomizudera temple to take some photos and to look around in various street shops on the nearby streets.

From there we made our way to a little traditional shop that sold hand made and painted ceramics like cups and bowls etc.
We all bought something from there since it was quite cheap.
From there we walked closer to our hostel to go to the CoCoIchibaya curry restaurant which we love so much :) Needles to say it was delicious.

From there we still had a bit time to kill, so we went for a half hour to the near by Avanti shopping mall and there I made a HUGE find at the ABC shoe store. I bought two pair of shoes, one Adidas and the other Vans, for just around 6000 yens which is about 55€ or less!!!!
Anyhow, then we went to the Starbucks before coming back to our hostel.
Tomorrow we will meat my friend and go together around the city!

Cheers
Robert
We woke up and packed and went to Ueno station to buy our ticket since it's less crowded than the Tokyo station. The shinkansen train left from the Tokyo station tho but the lines were ridiculous. We had good time to buy our bento and walk to the platform.
We were soon there since it takes a bit under 3 hours from Tokyo to Kyoto with the bullet train.
After we got to Kyoto we went straight to do our check in at the J hoppers Kyoto.
We went to a Korean BBQ restaurant called Chifaja. Oh it was so delicious, you could eat as much as you wanted for a fixed sum and time. We had the 1h 30min option and as always it was totally worth every penny :)

After eating we said our goodbyes and we went with Wilhelmiina and Hilda to a bar for a drink and then headed back to the hostel. Tomorrow the real sightseeing begins!

Cheers
Rob
We went straight to eat at a Sukiya chain restaurant. So donburi again :) hahaha It's just too good and simple to resist. Today we went to do some shopping in the nearby Askusa station shopping mall. We spent quite a lot of time there even though we were supposed to go straight to Akihabaras electric town. Well after we shopped, we went to drop of the items at our hostel and then we were finally on our way. We were supposed to meet few of our friends to go and sing karaoke with a bit later so we only had an hour to see around.
I had totally misunderstood where we would be going to for karaoke so they thought that we knew a place and vice versa. After stating that we couldn't find one there, we went to Shibuya. There we found a place and went there. The system was a bit complex since they had all these charges ,it wasn't so expensive though, but it was one of those moments I thank myself for studying Japanese.

After the Karaoke we ate sushi and went to a English pub. Just generally speaking a awesome night tho nothing in particular was done. Next up will be KYOTO! Can't wait.

Cheers
During breakfast I had struck up a conversation with a couple of Americans and they wanted to tag along until they would do their check in. So we all went all the way to JR Harajuku station and from there it is just a short walk to the Meiji shrine.
The roads were humongous and there were a few big Torii gates. Todays weather started out chilly but it soon became very warm because of the sun, so it was perfect for my intentions of the day.
A egg that was lazy and a bit disgruntled. It is so funny!

From there we started to walk to Shibuya which is known for it's Shibuya 109 building and for it's crossing where just everyone goes mad ones it becomes green. There are a lot of amusement type of shops and restaurants and vendors etc. It is just the best place to go and have a good time and to eat and drink. And it's hella crowded! :) hhahah but hey that's Japan.

So when we had seen enough we returned back to Asakusa and ate at a Donburi restaurant. I just LOVE donburi, it's all you need in life. It's quick, it's warm, it's plentiful and above all it is DELICIOUS. I had the rice with beef! So good!

There after we went to our hostel. we wanted to drink with our friends but since it was so late, we decided that we would drink by ourselves, but luckily we made new acquaintances at the hostel. A German girl joined us in our drinking :)
We had a blast and that's also part of the reason why I am writing all of this after hand

After we woke up we just went to the Tokyo station and from there to the Imperial palace grounds. It was very sunny and windy out side, yet it was a bit cold.
After that we went to Hamatsucho station to meet my friend and to have lunch with him.
We went to my favorite curry chain restaurant: CoCoIchibaya!!! I took my usual Chicken katsu curry, and as always, it was SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD!
After a filling meal we walked to a Park nearby and strolled around talking. Later we walked to the Tokyo Tower. It's an old broadcasting tower that reminds you of the Eiffel tower in France, though this was only 333 meters tall.
We walked from there to the metro station and took our subway train with one change to Asakusa.
My trip to NikkoToday we woke up a bit drowsy from last nights drinking. We were out in Asakusa and went to a street bar where I struck up a conversation with a few Japanese people. we had fun and they even bought me a beer and complimented me on my Japanese which always makes the little egomaniac inside of me pleased.
But back to today! I decided early on that, since the girls wanted to go and shop together in Harajuku, I would travel by myself. I thought about where to go for a while and decided that Nikko would be a good place to spend one day by myself.
Nikko of course is famous for its UNESCO world heritage temples and is the grave sight for the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate and Edo (what Tokyo was called back then), Tokugawa Ieyasu.

I must emphasize the fact that spring in Japan is so cool and beautiful. Coming from cold Finland it really feels nice to be walking around without a jacket.
The cherry trees are soon going to blossom so can't wait to see it!

In Nikko I took a stroll through the town towards the park where the temple complex lied. It was war, but quite windy outside. Thanks to the JRPass I could just simply walk and reserve the tickets and just go as I pleased.

I ate an Ekiben or a boxed lunch from the station on the train, it was delicious as always. After climbing stairs up to the temple and grave I took my time there and just absorbed all of the scenery in, bit by bit.

Finally as the clock was nearing half five I started to return to the station and took my trains back to Ueno. There I met up with my girlfriend and her sister to go and eat.
There is a quite good ramen shop at the station, so we went there.
After we had eaten we went by our hostel and rested a bit but then we wanted to still go out for a little walk, so I took them to see the nearby Tokyo Sky Tree.

Tomorrow we will probably do some intercity sightseeing.
'Till then!
It is always as accelerating to make the first step out of bed, knowing that you will see it first after many weeks.
This time I'm not alone in my travels. I have my girlfriend, her sister and three other friends with me. Though it will be mainly me, my girlfriend and her sister that travel together.

Today we didn't have the best start on our travels since, as it well happens sometimes, the flight was over booked and we didn't exactly have seats reserved, just the flight.
Finnair tried to give us monetary compensation to get us to take a later flight if we could. But for us it was a definite no go on that option. Why? well Hilda, my girlfriends sister had booked her flights after me and Wilhelmiina, and for some weird reason they had booked a seat for her...
Oh well We got seats thanks to the effort of the attendants at the airport and Finnair and we are now glad to say we're here!!!

Today, since we are a bit Jet lagged, we have been touring around Asakusa where our hostel is. Asakusa (for those who didn't know) for its temples, Incl. : the sensoji temple. Also this is where you find the picturesque thunder gate, or more properly known as "KAMINARI MON".

We ate some bentos we got from the paku paku lunch box shop just near by our hostel. they sell good quality food for a low budget prize, every Obento is about 250 yen each. It's INSANE.

We will go drinking tonight at the beautiful Asakusa bar street!!

Many cheers!

On Monday was our last whole day in Oslo so we decided to go to the Viking ship museum and the Munch museum. Such was part of what we were going to do but also I wanted to walk along (or up the) Akersalva river because I had heard/read somewhere that it was supposed to be very pretty and relaxing place to walk.

We woke up around nine and our wonderful host Jan, who had returned home the day before, made us some scrumptiously delectable omelets together with toast. Wow! It was soooooo good, and I mean what a nice guy he was to make breakfast to us, mere couch surfers!

I really like the whole concept of Norwegian hospitality and how the people are so friendly and happy!

After finishing breakfast we left for the subway/metro to get to the city center.

From there we walked to the backside of the Oslo Rådhus,at the harbor. It only took us approx. 10 min with a leisurely pace to get there. From there we took the bus nr. 30 towards Bygdøynes to get to the viking ship museum. The stop where you should get of is Vikingskipene.

You can use the same buss to go to the Norwegian folk museum, the Holocaust center, the kon tiki museum etc, which are all located on the same little peninsula.

The museum was interesting and I highly recommend making this trip while visiting the folk museum and the other interesting museums of the peninsula. We unfortunately did not visit them because my friend was not interested. But be warned! The viking ship museum has only three boats there and it is a relatively small place so I don't recommend just visiting there if you venture to the peninsula.
We got the student discount but I still thought it was a bit expensive for normal adults without discount: 60 kronor (~7€/9$) but students get in for half.

After we had digested everything we took the bus back to the city from where we went to the museum of Edvard Munch to see the Scream.
The ticket price was 50 kronor and was more or less worth while seeing.

I found it somehow abstractly funny that to get in you had to leave your jacket and bags in the locker and pass trough a airport security like security control to get in. It gave me a sort of false sense of coming in to a huge museum with many important exhibitions. But it was a small museum and the painting itself was indeed cool to see but I can't shake this sense of letdown from me.

Madonna

The reason the security is so tight is that the painting that they have there, has been stolen many times since it is so hugely famous.

Anyhow we looked around there for a while and after leaving we went to take the walk along the river which turned out to be the best ting that we had decided on doing on that whole day.

The riverside road was lovely to walk along and was really peaceful. We then took a little detour through a little hill road called telthusbacken towards the city. after a long day we then returned back home.

The next day we woke up at seven to leave together with our host to the city, He headed to work and we were left in the city to walk around aimlessly.
We didn't really have anything left to see so we just shopped and ate and drank coffee to pass time.

What a good day today was. We woke up at nine well rested because of the extra hour we got because of the winter day light savings or whatever. You know the thing where you turn your clock to wintertime, one hour backwards.

Anyhow we ate breakfast and left to the town. We walked to the National art museum to go see the exhibition for FREE!!! The entrance is free of charge on Sundays so it's great if you are on a budget. I highly recommend visiting there! The exhibitions were really nice, especially the paintings by Dahl.

I rarely go to art exhibitions though I really like art, but I usually go to art museums when vacationing.

We didn't have a map but I had a somewhat good hunch on where we should walk and after stopping to eat on the way, we arrived there.
The park is ridiculously huge!!! Its main passage was ornamented with sculptures of various sorts and the park was beautiful. I just wish we had come a bit earlier in Fall, when the trees still had properly some leaves.
The main sculpture, the big carved stone pylon at the center of the park, was majestic and truly worth its praise.
It was surrounded by symmetrically placed smaller sculptures on stairs and the pylon, or should we just call it a pole, had many human figures carved into it.
The amount of detail was a bit creepy but still, I really liked it.
I didn't pledge for anything but we still had a nice chat about current situations and about Finland etc.

Tomorrow we will most likely go to the Viking ship museum and other places, so for now I thank you for reading and hope to have you soon again.
The flight went really well and I was exited to meet my host befor meeting up with my friend Yuka who was coming with a later flight from Bodö.
My host lives in Skullerud, about fifteen minutes from the central railway-station by subway.
Jan, my host, was kind enough to agree to host us for the whole duration of our stay, even tough he is away from Friday to Sunday.
I got the keys and went back to the railway station to meet up with Yuka.
I think think that the people are really kind here and I feel relieved that I can get by with Swedish though they do speak excellent English as well.

It was a bit glum on the first day because of the light rain but we went around a bit to see the Domkirke church a short walk from the station.
We didn't really do much that day except for catching up with each other in Starbucks.
Today we had a chance of seeing more of the beautiful city. We went around the city on foot so we could see more of the city. We went to the national museum for art but decided not to enter today since it is apparently free of charge during Sundays, so if you ever travel to Oslo on a budget then that is one good place to go!

We walked through the spikersuppa park near the national theater and walked to see the City hall (Oslo Rådhus). It has some artwork frescos/wooden artwork on its walls on the outside. There is also a very particularly cool big clock. We walked to the port from there and went to see the Akerhus festning (Akerhus fort). Oslo is very scenic and beautiful during fall. The trees had nice color and the weather was gentle and sunny today. A perfect day for a walk and sight seeing.
The trees and grass are looking fine and green already and today we had 27 °C as the max. temp. in the country.

We had booked the tickets to Madame Tussauds online the night before for 27£. This was a wise choice since upon arriving we found a monstrous queue in front of the place, but since we had already bought our ticket we got into a special, much faster, queue.

It was loads of fun!

There were dolls of Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, J-Lo, Michael Jackson, Johnny Depp, Queen Elizabeth etc.

We were feeling a bit peckish afterwards, so we went to meet up with our two other friends to go to grab a bite together.

We went to a mall to eat at a restaurant called Nandos (Great place specialicing in Chicken dishes). It is so frigging good!

Afters doing some more shopping we retired back home.

So Yesterday didn't quite go as planed. It was then when we were supposed to go to Buckingham Palace, London tower etc. but the women folk took their sweet time at Victoria's secret and other similar shops that we decided that we would not have time to go to any of our planed places so we skipped them and went to eat and shop for some groceries for the party.
We then headed back to the apartment where me and my friend Leo made some delicious burgers and roast potatoes for the whole gang. The evening continued with more eating and drinking and lastly we went up to the rooftop to watch the Fireworks.

The Buckingham Palace

The next day we woke up to FINALLY go to see Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben, the winter wonderland etc.
We walked around so much and had a GREAT time, with the little exception of China town where we went into a cafe and there was so many people hugging space so that we had to sit in a cluster.
"Our friends are soon here" was heard a lot. Honest to God I felt like I would loose it there.

The Buckingham Palace must be a lot better at 11 a.m. when they are doing the change of the guards, because when we were there it was already long in to the day and it didn't feel so special.
The Big Ben on the other hand WAS worth going to. They even happened to be having a parade that we had time to catch a glimpse of.
From there we went to London Eye and China town before eating and heading out to the Winter wonderland.

They were truly two successful days !
